review 1: Mixed feelings about the "outcast." While our protagonist is definitely an introvert type being sucked in to high school "fun" by the popular kids. I do not see her as a true outcast. The outcast I knew in school were either rebels or the kids getting bullied. I was an outcast. Still, I love how she just gets sucked into trailing along behind her best friend to wherever the cheer leaders are going. Instead of refusing to go. I guess it's much better than what she's got waiting at home for her. I felt so bad for her from the start, poor little string along. Not the grand heroic loner I had hoped to read about. Still, it was 1970's the world was simpler, they say. I did enjoy this within three days time.
review 2: I wonder when Jo Ann Beard read my junior high sc
... morehool diaries....I was very pleasantly surprised by this novel. I had been led to believe that it was young adult fiction by some reviews, but I don't actually think that it is. I originally purchased it because of the title - because I live in Zanesville (but not the Zanesville of this book). I wasn't expecting to like the young narrator or relate very much to her, but the story is set in the late 60s/early 70s when I was coming of age and Beard has captured the detail of being a teen-aged girl at that time with great precision. Its a fun and quick read as well. less

It started out strong, but I felt it fizzled by the end.
