review 1: I loved the idea of the characters, and the plot was terrific, twisting and backtracking and creating wonderful suspense. Terrific romantic tension and delicious sexual writing - not too much, just enough. My problem is I just can't get used to the way Jo Goodman changes the perspectives of her characters so often and so quickly. I can be in the hero's head for a paragraph, then all of a sudden I'm seeing through the heroine's eyes. It's confusing for me, and it also prevented me from connecting on a real level with the characters.
review 2: Jo Goodman books are always worth the wait. The Last Renegade is another beautifully written, character driven historical romance with a particularly engaging hero and heroine. All the characters in her books are multi-la... moreyered and interesting, even the villains - and some of them you really hate. Jo has a way of taking old tropes and making them fresh, and writing strong, fairly silent heroes who are very masculine but always smart and thoughtful. And did I mention that this book is romantic? Very, and even though I knew it would have a happy ending I was compelled to gobble the book up to see how it would actually play out. less
