review 1: Revolutionary France is a dangerous and volatile place. After an attack on her life and her beautiful home, Marguerite de Fleurignac is on the run. She must let her contacts know that they have been jeopardized and get safely away from the men who hunt her. Beautiful, clever, and resourceful, she’s determined to make it out and to save as many as possible on the way. William Doyle, an English spy, has traveled to France to capture the de Fleurignac man they believe to be responsible for releasing a list of English soldiers to kill. Under the disguise of a scarred traveling book seller he arrives at the de Fleurignac home too late. When a bemusing minx of a girl catches his attention he at once sees through her servant disguise and plans to get close enough to her ... morefor her to lead him to her father. Getting her to her father will be the easy part, letting her go may break his heart. This book includes an interesting array of characters – The de Fleurignac father is a little bit crazy and may or may not be a culprit in the revolutionary mayhem. Other de Fleurignac family members come into play with suspicious motives and interesting personalities. Doyle’s sidekick called “Hawker” is a ruthless, albeit young, street kid and possibly future spy with undetermined loyalties in this book. He is matched by a young female spy who hides at a brothel and cares for a younger sister. There are a lot of interesting characters brought into play that I hope to read more about in future books. The story was well done, although a few parts were a bit of a stretch. Overall it was clever and enjoyable! The narration done by Kirsten Potter was excellent. She has a great reading voice and was a pleasure to listen to.
review 2: THE FORBIDDEN ROSE is the story first book chronologically of Joanna Bourne's Spymaster series. The book is a prequel and tells the story of Maggie and Doyle. Initially, Maggie and Doyle are on opposing sides because Doyle is an English spy in France looking for the source of the disclosure about the spy network that will result in the deaths of many. He suspects that Maggie's father is involved. Maggie is involved in smuggling people from France to avoid the Terror. This is the story of people with secrets and how they learn to love and trust one another.I really enjoyed this book. In many ways I liked it more than the Spymaster's Lady which I had read first. In this book, I felt that I knew both of the main characters and their motivations. Joanne Bourne does a great job in making an complicated and interesting plot that makes the reader turn the page to find out what is happening. I also enjoyed how the romance is deeply weaved into the plot. This is a book where the plot is not merely a vehicle to frame the romance. The spy plot is integral to the romance. I recommend this book! less
