The Trials and tribulations of the Palestinian - Gaza lot during the Suez canal crisis is a perfect example where this Julian Barnes quote holds true.Amidst all the clutter on Gaza Israel issue, 'Footnotes in Gaza' throws light on one of the first big obfuscations of Israeli actions in Gaza Strip that happened during the planned invasion of Gaza, and the subsequent take over of the Sinai peninsula in 1956. Written Almost half a century after the incident, Sacco patiently traces down the last survivors and eye witnesses of the incident. Sacco does a brilliant work of stitching together anecdotal accounts from these sources. 1 Star less than 5, ... morefor the book becomes a bit of a stretch in latter half. During the Rafah documentation, the author frequently digresses to current issues in Gaza, and uses too many sources who reveal the same facts again and again.
review 2: What a fantastic book! And so obsessively done--every aspect. The renderings of faces and backgrounds are all so layered and complete feeling. The pacing of the panels, the pages, the chapters, and the intertwining stories are all meticulous and artful. The work he clearly put into getting every possible angle and aspect of the story and his journalistic integrity are amazing. For the first time I feel like I have a grasp on something that happened in Israel, even though it's only two days in 1956. less
