review 1: Joe Sacco tells the stories that no one else will. In this book, he goes into India, Palestine, Malta, Iraq and Chechnya to tell the stories of suffering, of refugees running from their war-torn homes and families who are struggling against hunger. His illustrations are illuminating and simple. The reader gets a glimpse into all of these places I'm sure most of us will never go. This collection is heavy and heartbreaking, especially when reading on an already broken heart from recent events. How is the world still functioning?
review 2: The voice of the voiceless. A portrayal of despair & the complexity of its shape & form & how it has come to be. The human condition rife with tumult, it goes beyond just this, it goes to the very bone, the very marrow of the so
... moreul. These are a few descriptions I have for this book & its ever-delving author. Being enlightened about such subjects, this book brings much sadness to my heart. I would, however, rather be informed about such injustices than be in the dark about them. It is difficult to grasp the scope of brutality man exercises against another. The various ways man can dole out inhumanity. The range of sadism. This book is not about pessimism, it is about realism, but truly many in these grave situations have no light to latch onto. In me, it provokes action to the heart. In me, it promotes the mission of kindness I have set out to accomplish. The multitudes cry out for something so simple & yet something so foreign. What price the supremely vulnerable pay. I cannot fathom what type of incubation of terror those that enact the punishment must harbor. But I do not want to oversimplify. The situations many are in are quite complicated & there is a reason why these complex problems have not been resolved. At its very base, I suggest they adopt the will to solve it. There in lies the crux, there is no will. All parties except the status quo. I wish man the best, but I expect from him the worst. This book is edifying. I look forward to more of his works. less

Amazing, as always. Sacco's urgent, searching, compassionate journalism is absolutely devastating.

If there is only one graphic novel/memoir you read this year, let it be this one.
