review 1: Outstanding work by Sacco and essential reading for anyone who has appreciated his full length books such as Safe Area Gorazde and Palestine. These shorter pieces are wide ranging in time and place but the most impressive ones are the longer ones, on African refugees in Malta, on the war in Chechnya and on poverty in rural India. The piece on refugees will have particular resonance for Australians given that our treatment of asylum seekers is considerably worse than the treatment that Sacco implicitly condemns in Malta. It would be interesting to see Sacco's take on Manus Island and Nauru, especially as he grew up in Australia.
