review 1: Sacco's war-reportage comics have always been great. This one suffers as a result of its premise - a massacre of Palestinian men in 1956. The event is covered ad nauseum, from a dozen different angles. It also has a bit of modern day reporting, but it fails to live up to the high bar set by Safe Area Gorazde and Palestine.I'd recommend this for people who are already fans of Sacco, but Safe Area Gorazde is a much better place to start if you've never read any of his work.
review 2: In 1956, hundreds of Palestinians were rounded up by Isreali forces, beaten up brutally and fired into indiscriminately in a small town called Rafah in the Gaza strip. With barely a footnote devoted to the event in a UN report, Sacco embarks in 2002-03 on a quest to uncover the actua
... morel happenings. This book is a record of his experiences and the eventual piecing together of the truth of the event.Apart from solving the jig saw puzzle through numerous (mostly conflicting) testimonies, the book is also a chronicle of the day to day struggle of life in the Gaza strip. Night time aerial raids by Apache choppers, houses buldozed, stray bullets, border checkpoints, funeral processions and other events that all of us associate with Palestine somehow end up looking quite different through the art of Sacco. His bias towards the Palestinian's plight is quite evident but that can only be the weakest accusation on him for bringing out this work to add to our collective memory. I haven't read his most famous work 'Palestine' yet. That should be a good entry point to understand the difference in his handling of the topic. less

Well researched story of Israeli massacres in Gaza in 1957. Depressing to it's core.

A case of art doing a better job of showing you what is going on than the news.
