review 1: 3 1/2 stars. Not sure where I came across this book. I think I read something else by the author? I read a review that described this book as a slasher movie in book form. I couldn't imagine what that might look like, so since it was well reviewed, thought I'd give it a try. I'm not a fan of slasher movies. I think blood and gore are the refuge of the unimaginative. The unknown and unshown have a much greater scare factor. I did really enjoy the first half of the book. I liked the relationship between Martin and his mother. They were so different and yet so clearly a loving family. And then the slashing began. It started off well. It was shocking and chilling. But as the body count increased, it lost credibility for me. As I was wading through blood so deep I was afraid it... more was going to short out my Kindle, I'm afraid I started getting bored. I thought it was campy and ridiculous. But what do I know? Maybe it was supposed to be? Maybe there is a subgenre of slasher book satire and this is supposed to fit there?
review 2: One thing that I've always admired about Joey Comeau's writing is that he's not afraid to get emotionally messy. The is a messy book that tries to juggle a serial killer and coming-of-age stories in two separate hands and have them intersect intermittently. Tonally, it's imbalanced—especially the priest killer's cartoonish menace—but it's between those extremes that Comeau finds some honesty in childhood/adult fears. Emotions here are complicated, and even if you're not buying it, you'll have a difficult time not being compelled by it. less
