review 1: I stumbled across the first book in this series, A Mermaid's Kiss, purely by accident. Initially, I was a little put-off by the inter-species mating business, but it didn't take me long to get past that. I ended up enjoying book one so much that I've marked it as a definite re-read. That being said, it took me a few months to decide to read A Witch's Beauty. I instantly connected with Mina's character in book one, but I wasn't sure how I would feel about angel/ursula. I regret having waited so long to read this book.Hill has a remarkable talent for capturing emotion, especially the longing that resides within a person that has experienced hatred, hardship, and an everlong internal battle with one's nature. I fell in love with that during Kiss, but really came to connect in... more Beauty. Becoming reacquainted with Mina and getting to know her was a beautiful journey. The relationship that buds between she and David is one of the better written relationships I've ever read. Hill had one me over by the second chapter, but *SPOILER ALERT* towards the end, when David and Mina venture into the Dark One world, and Mina asks him to sing her "that song" again, I really didn't want to say goodbye to the two. Finishing this book left me feeling bereft and lonely; i wanted it to go on for at least another 300 pages!Bottom line, this is a BEAUTIFUL piece of literature. The writing is well done, the sex is tasteful and pulse-pounding, and the character development is spot on. I am now endeavoring to read everything Joey Hill has ever written.
review 2: This is the story of seawitch, Mina and the angel, David, her guardian. It's such a tragic, beautiful story(a little wordy at times) but very engaging and sweet. Mina is a tortured soul, confining herself to cold waters and isolation to keep her Dark One half in check. She needs the constant pain to make the pain of her own life go away. David comes along and vows to protect her from the Dark Ones and knows instantly that she's his forever after.(actually he says he knew this from meeting her in book 1) Mina has NEVER been shown mercy or love or even remote kindness other than from Anna. She has no way to know how and why someone of David's angelic stature can love her. She's badly maimed and scarred from a torturous event that happened when she was nine years old. David is a beautiful, young angel (only 30) who comitted suicide at the age of 14. He's such a maginificant male *sigh* showing how her submission to him can bring her to trust him. (And Lord have mercy...the words that come out of him mouth are soooooomethin' else! *fans self*) He too, harbors deep regret and secrets from his past. Their story is not action packed. It's not nearly as intense as the Vampire Queen series. But it is very emotional and very dark. The scenes where David cuts Mina after their intimate moments together were so beautiful. David doing it with his own blade and his own hand, was just *sighs* endearing and dark. And his sacrifice for her was just as devastingly beautiful. David is a true male of worth! less
