review 1: This was quite a departure from the Vampire Queen series stories. Ruby and Derek have a very long history before this adventure and we as readers are introduced to a brand new world of witches, demons, and sorcerers. I had a bit of a struggle with these two complicated aspects for about half the book. Ruby is dynamic, sometimes almost annoyingly insecure, but ultimately strong and heroic. I read where some folks had issues with the age gap (no worse than Lady Lyssa and Jacob). This may be due to the fact that Derek was around when Ruby was a child but it in no way came across as creepy to me.
review 2: Having read previous stories from her Vampire Queen and her Knights of the Boardroom series, I know that when Joey W. Hill writes sex, it's never just sex. I wa
... mores happy to find that her ability to craft erotic scenes that are transformative for her characters continues in the Arcane Shot series. Because of the very slow reveal of the secrets being kept, it took a little while to fully grasp the fullness of the relationship between the leads as well as the depth of the damage needing to be repaired. But once I got there with these characters, I couldn't help but crave and then relish their happily ever after. I have to say that I was hesitant to begin the story after reading the blurb on the back. The character names (Ruby Night Divine and Derek Stormwind) sound a little on the corny side. Once into the story, where the last names are seldom used, they didn't bother me as much. But I did have to wonder if this story was started on a dare to "write something about witches" using those names. If it was, it was fortunate that it started out in Joey W. Hill's capable hands. Disclosure: I won this book from goodreads. less
