review 1: I've just finished reading this book - it was this month's title in the Monday Night Murders reading group at my local library. I really enjoyed it, although it seemed a bit slow at the beginning. The way the author moves between events in the present and those in the past helps maintain the suspense, and I certainly didn't see the twist at the end coming! Now looking forward to discussing it with the others at the next meeting.
review 2: This was one of those books that was hard for me to put down once I’d started because I just had to find out what happened to that little boy who had wandered away from his grandfather’s house on a foggy day in 1972 and was never seen again. After only a few pages we discover that he had stumbled into the path of strange
... morer who introduced himself as the person who, as we continue to read on, turns out to be a deadly killer. From that point on it’s pretty obvious that the little boy did not die by accident. But….just exactly what happened that day was a mystery that plunged the little boy’s mother into a deep depression from which, 20 years later, she had yet to emerge. It set the tone for the novel which moves back and forth in time as the story gradually unfolds and we get to know the characters whose lives are all intertwined. Set on a remote island off the coast of Sweden, the book was filled with vivid descriptions of tiny seacoast fishing villages and the people who lived there. Luckily for those of us who are new to Johan Theorin’s writing and eager to read more, it’s a setting he returns to in subsequent novels. So I’m looking forward to going back. less
