review 1: I've been reading Scandinavian mysteries all summer: Camilla Lackberg, Karen Fossum, Jussi Adler-Olsen. This is my favourite of them all. It's more than formulaic. Has an interesting sense of place, strong characters and the writing is fine. Usually about mid-way through a mystery I read the end to see what happens, and then go back and sift through the unread portion. Not this time. The writing was so good that I was very much the polite reader, working through the book word by word, and letting the author reveal the story in his own, good time.
review 2: Excellent addition to the Scandinavian murder mystery genre, which can range from very good to terrible, in my opinion. A little boy, Jens, while out walking disappears mysteriously into a mist. The story
... morespans decades; two subplots alternate: years later,Jens's mother and grandfather try to discover what had happened, after the grandfather receives one of the little boy's sandals in the mail--no clue who had sent it. Another subplot involves the 'black sheep' of a local family and his fate. There are unexpected twists and turns in the story. It was well-written and atmospheric. less

Sort of a slow start but it got going to some extent after a while.
