review 1: I enjoyed The Quarry. I read Theorin’s novel The Darkest Room a few months ago and really enjoyed it so I wanted to check out more of his work. The Quarry takes a while to get going and that’s the only real failing. I found the first fifty or so pages a bit of a drag. The pace eventually picks up and The Quarry develops into a pretty decent crime novel. The Quarry is nowhere near as good as The Darkest Room which was much creepier. The Quarry is one of those in-between novels where it’s not brilliant but not quite bad enough to be shit. The pacing is off at first and meanders all over the place and the characters took a while to get used because displayed weird reactions to series events. I liked the way Theorin combines elves, trolls and porn (not as weird as it sou... morends). I really liked the Swedish setting. Theorin really brings Oland to life. The Quarry may be the first novel I’ve read that deals with the porn industry. Theorin manages not to make this sleazy. I liked the twists and turns The Quarry took. Overall The Quarry is a decent Swedish crime mystery novel.
review 2: It took me quite a while to get into The Quarry. The story is quite layered and is reasonably well structured, intertwining the lives and histories of a small group of people. The strengths of the book are the characterisation, which was pretty solid, and the sense of place relating to the island and its history and myths. Whilst the plot worked okay in its own terms, I simply didn’t believe the police investigation into the fire and the subsequent death of Jerry. The police barely engaged with Per and Jerry, and seemed totally unconcerned when Jerry dies, apparently making no efforts to track down his killer. There were also some passages that I found didn’t ring true. A slow boiler of a read, which got better as it went on, but for me at least didn’t quite live up to the five star reviews I’ve seen elsewhere. less

Ytterligare en nervkittlande berättelse av denna författare. "Håll i hatten och ta en sväng". ;)

Jag saknar den kittlande spänning som författaren hade i Skumtimmen och Nattfåk.

Quizá es más una novela de suspense que de misterio en realidad.
