review 1: A haunting venture, Handling the Undead explores the quintessential postmodern monster myth through the psycho-social paradigm requisite in broader European culture. The images are coldly personal, pragmatically descriptive, and rationally unconventional. Lindqvist manages to yield indirect, biting philosophical commentary on existentialism and Lockean human nature, while interspersing gems of culturally dark humor. Despite the logic seeming convoluted in a few instances, and it certainly isn't a novel equivalent to the film style of grindhouse, some might consider it a treat for the discerning, more varied reader. Unfortunately, "treat" is the extent of its existence, as Lindqvist resorts to creating spiritist crutches to move the story on, leaving the reader only able to... more embrace it as an intangible, and not wholistic, excursion.
review 2: Very good, sometimes excellent, but with a resolution that essentially establishes the entire novel as one big metaphysical Hallmark card: your soul is a butterfly, and you need to let go of your deceased loved ones because you'll see them again one day. It's shallow, but is it really any more shallow than the standard kill-yourself-because-everything-is-hopeless zombie novel climax? Not at all. Just a little more... cheesy, somehow.Night of the Living Dead set the nihilistic tone for this sub-genre over forty years ago, so it's a little surprising to read a zombie story ultimately concerned with optimism--even of the half-baked, pseudo-spiritual variety. But there's more to Handling The Undead than its feel-good, Zombie Whisperer spirituality. Along the way, Lindqvist delivers some truly wonderful characterization (of the pay-attention-to-what-this-guy-is-doing variety, if you're a writer) and haunting descriptions. Despite the fact that the English translation could have used a polish, the writing in this book far outshines much of what you'll find in most zombie fiction. It's a novel that happens to contain walking corpses--it's not a zombie novel. There is a difference. less
