review 1: In my view one of the best WW1 novels, up there with Birdsong, the Regeneration trilogy and All Quiet on the Western Front, it also reminded me of Susan Hill's Strange Meeting with its theme of friendship between two soldiers spilling into something deeper. In this case, however, the relationship leads inexorably to tragedy because of its very ambiguity-one of the men being sure of his attraction to other men, the other less clearly so. The ending is powerfully shocking, even if hinted at beforehand, and the result haunts two of the main characters for the rest of their lives. For anyone who enjoys WW1 novels this is a must read.

... moreow our actions define our destinies and they break your heart. I wish Tristan's story would have ended differently, but this was a brutally honest way of showing the horrors of war and the effects a narrow-minded society has on people (Tristan's family, jfc!). You both love and hate the characters, but you can always understand their motives. less
