review 1: Wonderful story. Great to put along side Private Peaceful and War Horse. Touching tale of love of a son for his parents. A nine year old boy who tries help support his mum and to save his shell shocked dad during WWI. Shows the war from the home front. Good characters in tough situations and working to make do in difficult times. Includes a conscientious objector and the neighborhood's response to him. Very positive hopeful ending. A very good read.
review 2: "Stay Where You Are & Then Leave" by John Boyne was a good read. Not only did the novel reveal some of the horrors and atrocities of WWI but it also did a great job of capturing the language and culture of England during that time period. The book tells the story of nine-year old Alfie trying to deal wi
... moreth his father being away at war until he finds out that he returned to a hospital suffering from what we now call PTSD. The author does a great job showing the world through the eyes of a young boy trying to help his mother cope. The writing is descriptive and helps carry the story along well. I recommend this book to those who enjoy historical fiction or are looking for a quick read with a fantastic story. less
