review 1: John Burnside creates an otherworldly atmosphere in this story that takes place in the lonely reaches of Norway beyond the Arctic Circle. Burnside takes the reader to a place that is full of unnatural possibilities where the real and the imaginary become indistinguishable. A reclusive artist and her daughter are two of the very few inhabitants of this bleak landscape. There is also an old man who tells stories of trolls, gods, and evil spirits that come from old legends. This particular summer there is something strange going on. People drown. They disappear. What is real? And after reading this book I am still wondering.
review 2: A good atmospheric book, set in Norway's far north, above the Arctic Circle. That weird midnight light shines throughout th
... moree book. The detachment and solitude of living there is captured engagingly, along with a set of bizarre characters and increasingly bizarre chain of events. It is hard to make a distinction if what the protagonist tells is real or imaginary - and here lies the charm of this novel. less
