review 1: Truly something 'other', this book is remarkable in not being a description of events, but more than most first-person narratives, an account of one person's experience of those events. The central events are wrapped in mystery, never fully explained, or even seen very much on the page - this is rather one person's experience of events, indirectly experienced but emotionally transformative. Everything is as if witnessed through a gauze, or out of the corner of the eye, but the sensations the events cause are meticulously and vividly rendered. Quite quite remarkable, and it creates a real atmosphere of otherworldliness that suits perfectly it's setting in northern Norway. Superb.
review 2: I am not quite sure how to evaluate this book. It is really strange one, ... moreand it would be too easy to just use the star measurement. Burnside's style is absorbing, even though the plot itself couldn't move any slower. I found myself wondering while reading, if there would be some unexpected twist in the behavior of characters, or some unresolved thing would be cleared up. Nothing like that happened. However, I enjoyed the self-explanatory narrative of the main character - Liv - who guides us through the whole book. If you are not patient, you can easily start to hate her "endless babbling" about how she perceives actual scene. The atmosphere is dark and stick, reader's imagination is able to fully unfold its potential and play tricks with your mind. To summarize, I would give the book 3,75/5. less
