review 1: This is a strange book. I was expecting a horror/mystery story but it veered into something else entirely. And midway on, I wasn't sure whether I wanted to continue since it did not seem like it was progressing with regards to the murders. However, John Burnside's beautiful prose kept me going, and I was glad I finished the book because then the entire story made more sense, yet at the same time left me with many questions hanging.
review 2: It started off so well, but somewhere along the way, I swear I lost track of what the hell was going on. Really wish he'd fleshed out certain characters and at least delved into the ritual in which the boys were killed, instead of jumping to Morrison's plaster-scene and Leonard's indoctrination. I felt as if Burnside left a
... moren entire chunk of the story (read: the actual murder of the children and what that symbolized for the Moth Man as a killer), and skipped right to the ending, which was the Moth Man's motive. That was entirely understandable, and I had a hunch ever since Leonard mentioned the man's sporadic entrance into town, but it felt bland because certain instances that seemed important were simply left out. less

Some writers can craft beautiful prose but just have nothing interesting to communicate.
