review 1: It's a talented author who can make a subject matter so dark as Glister's seem beautiful and poetic. Set largely outdoors, the story works its way through a decaying landscape that has been destroyed by the chemical plant that dominates it. And where it strays from the abandoned industrial wasteland, it moves in to deep forests which prove to be magnificently darker. It is here that we are presented with the opening scene and the horrific image it contains: a dead boy, obscenely murdered and yet beautifully decorated. Whilst the novel works to unravel the secret of who killed not only this boy but the several others who disappear, this plot seems somehow to remain in the background throughout. The novel is instead driven by the landscape and the characters that emerge out ... moreof it. It's a strange and unique book to read, somehow beyond anything else I've read.
review 2: Oui,bon. Je me faisais une joie, mais non. Certes, l'écriture est sublime, d'une poésie transcendante et d'une douceur folle, elle tranche avec le propos glauque et noir, avec le désespoir qui habite le récit et ses personnages. Tout est un délice, les personnages trash, entre les adultes malades physiquement ou complètement dépressifs ou fous, et les jeunes violents et cruels, l'univers évoqué par Brunside est aussi effrayant que fascinant. Et pourtant ! Le côté mystique de la chose m'a laissée sur le côté de la route, tandis que l'excès d'onirisme m'a carrément poussée dans le fossé. De la poésie oui, mais du flou artistique pour finalement tomber à plat au milieu de pas grand-chose n'a pas suffit à me faire crier au génie. La cohérence et la vraisemblance m'ont parfois manqué, les différents points de vue ne m'ont pas paru spécialement adaptés au récit, et le manque de surprise a failli avoir raison de ma patience, car ici, point de suspens ou de coup d'éclat, l'assassin pointe son nez avec ses gros sabots. Hormis une écriture magistrale, il n'y a pour moi rien d'autre à retenir ici, et cela ne me suffit pas. less
