review 1: A good book for quick self-reflection. I could have read it in a day (or an hour!), but I tried instead to read a chapter a day so that I could mull it over. It's a very straightforward, simple self-help style book. I'm usually not a fan of self-help as a genre, but this was easy and solid enough to warrant the read. As one professor said of Maxwell, much of his work is a 'mile wide, inch deep.' I'd be inclined to agree with that assessment for the book. Instead of a deep, probing analysis of the human psyche, Maxwell gives good, general things to think about, and skims their surfaces, inviting the reader to pride their depths in his or her own life. I think it's a grand approach. The only small critique I'd have for the book is the seemingly small emphasis it put on Jesus H... moreimself. There were a couple points in the book that made me squirm. The most representative example of those points is when he speaks of commitment, and his commitment to building a new church building. He writes: 'To accommodate growth, I needed to improve my [church] staff. That meant terminating some people who were very popular.' (60-1). Firing and adding church staff members is not how the church is suppose to operate. I understand that the book is not written to an exclusively Christian audience, but a church is not a business. Staff members are not under an executive pastor like they would be under a CEO. The pastor cannot just fire and hire at will. There are many similar instances where capitalist business ethics are applied to life under the guise of biblical ones. The book, however, is still a general one and not an exclusively Christian one, so these, while unsettling, are completely understandable.Overall, a good book. The conclusion gives a great way to apply the 'Daily Dozen' and move forward. If you want a light, self-help book to get started, especially if you're in business, read this one.
