review 1: This was the selection for our church group. I've done other marriage studies, but I found the approach to this one refreshing. While others have taken the approach "if you had done it right from the beginning, like we told you to, like we did, then everything would be better for you," this took the approach that "we have all made mistakes, including us, and it has made a mess of things. But, together with God, we can do better at overcoming those mistakes and having a happier marriage.". Not their words, but mine. This book doesn't attempt to absolve us of blame for problems in our marriage. It does attempt to help us recognize things in our marriage that take us away for God's help in maintaining a healthy marriage. The authors approach recognizing that humans fail... more was refreshing as an attempt to help rather than berating for failure. No guarantees that it will work for everyone, but could open some eyes that were closed by other, more browbeating works.
review 2: This book gave me some good thoughtsto think about. Eldredge continues with his special storytelling style and paints a picture of marriage as an adventure together in times of war. I like his way of sharing from himself and his wife. This brings it down to earth. I would say it is very real and more general in their thoughts but this is also what makes it so interesting becaues he only opens up an area and gives some advice, it is not meant to go deep but more like a revelation that helps you take the first step in the right direction. less
