review 1: A real gem of a book. Walton argues that there is no conflict between scientific and biblical stories on origins, simply because Genesis 1 has not been written as an account of origins. One of the immediate consequences of the book's message is to stop vilifying Christians who take scientific theories of origin seriously and rather expose the metaphysics denying purpose that often comes with it. Wise discernment is needed in thinking Walton's arguments through, a discernment that does not fall into the categories presented by a lame science-faith debate. Walton presents an alternative that Christian scientists and educators cannot afford to ignore.
review 2: Walton proposes an understanding of Genesis 1 not as a description of material creation but of function
... moreal creation, which is capped by God taking His rightful seat in the temple of the earth He has just created, sitting at the controls and reining as He should. While this proposed interpretation is good and valuable, the attempted incorporation into discussions of prevailing scientific theories are inconsistent philosophically. I do like, though, that he ultimately points out that his interpretation alleviates much of the tension between those who want to take a stand against certain scientific philosophies and the biblical truth of God as Creator. Instead, he teases apart the philosophical problems from the scientific ones so that they can be considered separately and on their own merits. less

Smart and compelling. A bit redundant at times, but that actually helped me grasp the material.

Wish I had read this many years ago. Does a great job of reading the text it's own terms.

Needs to be read more than once. You may have to do some rethinking.
