review 1: Though I found the second installment of Chew slightly less compelling than the first, I maintain that the central premise is clever. Since this is the second installment, there’s no need for the story to cover how Chu’s “superpower” works (which may have been my favorite part of the first one). Instead, this installment finds Chu traveling abroad to uncover the origins of a chicken-flavored plant and capture the criminals who aim to exploit it. The foodie themes and Chu’s helplessness with women, again, figure prominently and help make the comic more rounded and interesting to this foodie reader.
review 2: Another good volume! Once again, I love Rob Guillory's art and coloring. This style of comic is particularly appealing to me, with it's strong lin
... morees illustrating distinctive characters that are unique while not being too realistic and too perfect. The coloring is wonderful, as each color palate really sets the tone for the story.Tony Chu is a character I like more and more as each page passes. I like his determination, his unyielding dedication to the ideals of his job, his courage under pressure, and the adorable way he completely shuts down around Amelia. Speaking of Amelia, we've still barely seen her, but with the promise of a date with Tony on the horizon, things are looking up!I'm so glad they were able to bring Tony's old partner, John Colby, back, and the fact that he has a bionic half-face now makes him even more epic! I love how snarky he is, and what a great combo he and Tony make. Also, and eyeball that doubles as a projector. Also, finally getting Tony's jerk boss Applebee off his back (by hilariously and correctly guessing that he was unconsciously hiding his sexuality). These are mysteries continued and more introduced in this volume. First, what exactly is this "vampire" and what is his goal? It seems like he is another cibopath, or something similar, who has created the vampiric persona to hide behind and create an increased atmosphere of fear. Because fear heightens the power of the blood he drinks? Still not clear on that one. But it would be great to figure out his goals and why he has so many Russian fighter girls in bikinis serving him. Another mystery is was the USDA agent killed by the vampire? Was that who she was tracking? It's hard to say for sure. So that mystery is either connected with the first or an isolated one.And of course, we have the mystery of the gallsaberry. A fruit that tastes just like chicken when cooked that somehow came from space. It'll be interesting to see how this fruit comes up again. It was nearly all destroyed by the frog-breeder's men, but of course Amelia was able to sneak a seedling off the island. And speaking of the frog-breeder, I get why he'd want to wipe out the whole gallsaberry crop, but why does he want Tony dead?Lots of mysteries still playing out. Now is the time to solve some crimes, and luckily I have the next volume at hand! less
