review 1: Piper's treatise on marriage is a breath of fresh air. Per Piper, marriage with all its glory of romance, sex, and childbearing ultimately are ultimately temporary and note guaranteed for this life. While embracing the difficulty, disappointments, and maddening nature of marriage, Piper points to the Christ-centered reason for marriage, through analogies of being naked and not ashamed, living vertically and bending outward, and focusing on forgiving and forbearing. One of my favorite quotes: "Marriage passes through breathtaking heights and through swamps with choking vapors. It makes many things sweeter and with it come bitter providences."
review 2: This was an excellent and challenging book. The author reminds couples that marriage is not about the feelings
... more of "staying in love," but rather a covenant that mirrors the covenant of Christ with His bride--the church. The author spends much time on scriptures to help explain his points. This picture of marriage as a covenant does not leave the reader with a bleak concept of marriage, however. Piper shows that a covenant-keeping marriage provides the environment needed to allow for grace and love. less

A good book, but the first few chapters are a bit of a slog. It picks up as it goes along.
