review 1: Piper talks about the two wills of God — his "will of decree" and his "will of command" — and says that the Bible clearly teaches both and that the appropriate position is to hold both in tension as being true. Essentially he deals with how God can will (desire or decree) that people be holy (not sin) and be saved, yet as the same time how God can will (cause) people to do evil in God's pursuit of his ultimate purposes and can elect some for salvation and some for condemnation. While I agree that the Bible appears to teach this tension, I'm not convinced that Piper has the proper explanation for this. It may be my own attempt to use my limited vision and logic to understand God, but I can't go there. I rate this 4-star because it forced me to think and rethink my bel... moreiefs.
review 2: Piper's "Does God Desire All to Be Saved?" is a short summary on the two wills of God. I only gave this book three stars because Piper didn't really say anything new or revolutionary. In this book Piper simply says a lot of things he's already said, and quotes a lot of Jonathan Edwards. If you have heard a sermon by Piper on the sovereignty of God then this book won't have too much new stuff for you to read.Overall, a good book. This would be a good introduction for any person starting their journey of understanding the sovereignty of God and the doctrines of grace. This book will be useful to hand out for friends for a quick read as well as a reference tool. less
