review 1: I've been critiquing this book on facebook as I finish up the chapters, so I don't plan on giving a full review. I entered this book thinking I was probably a two or three point Calvinist, and exited it realizing I'm very likely a zero point Calvinist. My frustrations with the Calvinist view is the assurance that the scriptures about predestination means exactly what it says at face value, but scripture that says Christ died for all doesn't actually mean "all."I'm still interested in the topic and have a few names to further read. John Piper's tone in this book was very confrontational, even at one time saying that if you do not think as he does, you are "stunted" in your love and worship of God. Time and again Piper makes it clear that not only is his position correct... more, but that if you have a differing view, you cannot fully love God. He never came out and said that you are not saved, but it's to the point where I wonder if that's what he truly thinks.I've listened to John Piper a number of times, and clearly he knows more about scripture than I do. But reading this book leaves me with many unanswered questions and I am unconvinced that Calvinism is a fully accurate view of Christianity.
review 2: What a book! John Piper compels the reader in such a simple, straight-forward way. Simplicity is not stupidity, brevity is the soul of wit - Piper is an amazing author, and this is a great read. He lays out the historical background of the Five Points of Calvinism, then he goes through them one by one, firstly explaining them briefly, later in detail. In the end he writes of how "the old gospel" - Calvinism - has changed his life, and the lives of men as Augustine, Spurgeon, Jonathan Edwards, etc. In the end he is not trying to win a theological argument, but rather, he lovingly points out, that for the reader to have a deeper experience in worshiping and loving God, he must understand and practice reformed theology. less
