review 1: Let me put this up front - Scalzi has great ideas and Lock In is no exception. And there's no doubt that the guy can write. So why is it, that nearly every Scalzi book I read leaves me feeling slightly dissatisfied. Not very dissatisfied, mind you, just slightly. I think there's a laziness in the editing of Lock In. It has a noir tone without the noir pacing and this means it falls just a little flat. (Great idea though....)
review 2: Wow! This book took me by surprise. It's a fast-paced and twisty sci-fi thriller, one in which you're constantly kept on your toes with new details. The story is set slightly in the future, but not so far off that you feel like you're in an alien society. The most striking thing about this book is that the author doesn't give you
... more a lot of upfront info about the characters, places and events you encounter; you learn about them as you go, in a natural fashion--off-hand remarks, conversations, eyewitness observations from the main characters, etc. It's a tricky thing to pull off, since you risk leaving the reader so clueless about what's going on that they get frustrated and give up, but Scalzi pulls it off. (And oh, oh how refreshing a change from the "info dump" so common to sci-fi novels!) less

Scalzi brings another win. A good mix of procedural with a near future twist.
