review 1: This series centers on a retired NYPD "super cop", David Gurney. David is quiet, likeable, brilliant, and has a very logical way of thinking. His wife, Madeline, is more of an intuitive sort, and the story of their marriage underlies the main plot (they had a young son who died). There are crimes and murders in each book, and the perpetrators are always interesting, with story lines going in several directions. I couldn't put the book down and read it in three days.
review 2: Probably 3.5 stars, but not quite 4. Anyway, this is a very interesting murder mystery with some unusual paths. A young journalism student has an idea for a school project: interviewing family members of victims of a serial killer to see how their lives were impacted. A tabloid-l... moreike TV program, known for sensationalism and trashy programs, picks up the idea and contracts with her. She then asks for guidance from a medically retired NYPD homicide detective, who gets more involved in the murders than expected. The plot is a little predictable. In fact, it's surprising and a bit unbelievable that the detective didn't figure out the angle until the end of the book - it was so glaringly obvious. The identity of the serial killer wasn't as obvious, but once you figured out the reason for the murders, the list of suspects was rather short. It's well-written and the characters have depth and breadth. I guess I would have given it 4 stars had it been less predictable. But, it's still worth reading. less
