review 1: This is the fourth Dave Gurney novel and it is as good as the first three. That, by the way, is a laudable achievement! Verdon is a darn good novelist. You do, however, have to read them in order. Now, many reviewers here complain that Dave's wife is a right royal pain in the ass, which she is, or that his mate Hardwick is a bit too liberal with the 4-letter words, which he is. But, this is how Verdon makes the characters REAL. They have faults, they have baggage, they do dumb things, just like real people. Even Dave Gurney is still screwed up, and his actions are affected, after having watched his 4-year old son killed in a hit-and-run many years before. If you want interesting characters who are not stereotypes and stories that are complex and interesting, then I highl... morey recommend this series but start at the beginning.
review 2: I love a good procedural, and I love it even more if it can keep me surprised and interested. In some ways, Verdon's book is standard: retired cop pulled into an investigation, investigation gets ridiculously complex, etc. But I give big points for keeping the plot twists unusual and interesting, making things feel like they couldn't be solved until suddenly they were. Gurney is a likable protagonist, a thoughtful guy, and he does enough self-analysis here to make him more than just your average investigative protagonist. less
