review 1: I was quite surprised when I picked this book up and saw that it is actually a coffee table book; filled with full page, glossy photos of Lady GaGa (and quite a few of her inspirations such as Freddie Mercury, Madonna, Grace Jones). Some photos were rare (at least I had never seen them before and believe me, I've seen plenty). It was interesting to see a photo of her parents together in 2010. You can see the similarities between her and her mother and even a little bit of her father. The text was sparse. Didn't really go into too much detail. Born here, lived here, went to school here yadda yadda yadda. No interviews or scandalous details. Dissapointed me a little but the pictures definitely made up for it. One thing about this book that you should know: when the author ta... morelks about GaGa's influences, he gives each of them a full page. So when he talks about how Madonna affected some of Lady GaGa's outfit choices and how they are similar in their career takeoffs, he dedicates one page to Madonna entirely, talking about her debut album and how it fared on the pop charts, her early music videos etc. Same thing for Freddie Mercury and Grace Jones and various other inspirations of GaGa's. So not only will you learn a little about Lady GaGa, but you'll also hear about Elton John's number one single "Crocodile Rock" in 1973, and how RedOne almost moved back to Sweden in 2007 because work was scarce but then he got lucky with being able to produce Kat DeLuna, and various tidbits like that. I mainly liked this book for the pictures :X
review 2: I think I've read most of the books that are published about Lady GaGa! Yikes! How did that happen? This one is a cross between a coffee table book and a biography with lots of big pictures of GaGa in crazy outfits. In all of the books about her I've read, the writing is sub-par even though I think the authors are all music journalists. They do that thing that biographers sometimes do - where they write like they know exactly what their subject was feeling at a certain point in time or on a certain matter. I hate that! I also thought the quotes from Lady GaGa were ridiculously pretentious! There's one where she uses the word "craft" to describe what she does, and I was like: "Vomit!" A lot of times I think she's just trying to emulate what she thinks a smart, artsy person sounds like. Like the other GaGa books out there, this one is probably worth a casual perusal but nothing more. less
