review 1: Well, here's hoping the second volume can mend some of the issues with the first. The fast pacing of the first five issues seemed a bad choice for the complexity of the story being told. I have no idea what limits their are to the powers the fourth horseman, Death, possesses. There are suggestions throughout that he can be killed, with makes for an obvious paradox left completely unexplained. I'd rather know more about the individual characters' pasts, personal agendas, and abilities than clumsily revisiting them later in the story arc. Others seem to suggest this picks up in later issues, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt for now. I am enjoying the art, however, but the art alone can't carry the story.
review 2: I'm not sure I fully understand wha... moret is going on in this comic, but the ideas that Jonathan Hickman came up with here are kind of cool, so it's enjoyable enough. It's a weird alternate history/sci-fi/western/magic/end of the world mashup, involving the four horsemen of the apocalypse, some sort of Biblical/Native American/Chinese prophecy, lots of competing factions, weird technology like robot horses and such, and plenty of violence. The story involves Death (who looks like a cowboy with pure-white skin and clothes) going rogue and avenging some sort of wrong that was done to him by the other horsemen and the leaders of the various nations who are trying to bring about the end of the world, and all sorts of weirdness abounds. I don't know if it all adds up to much, but it's a pretty enjoyable ride, with some decent dialogue, pretty good art by Nick Dragotta, and lots of crazy stuff going on. It's worth a read, even if I'm not really sure what it all means. less
