review 1: The plot of the first collection has a lot more forward thrust. This book slows to develop other characters and other story lines. While I appreciate that it is trying to sketch a complex world, I found it too often confusing. I had a harder time connecting emotionally to the characters as the scenes were more like a series of vignettes with less dramatic build than in the first collection. Still I will continue reading this in the hopes that all will come together and pay off as the story progresses.
review 2: This volume isn't quite as strong as the first one, as it focuses on expanding the scope and fleshing out the players, and doesn't have the climax Volume 1 did. But the art is still unique and impressive, and the characters interesting, even if most see... morem to get short shrift. There's a lot of world building here, and most of it is fascinating. But it's slower, and the character investment is less because of that. Still good, but it's a foundation and not a story on its own. less
