review 1: I enjoyed this, but it was not easy reading. First of all, it's volume 2 of a series that took an ill-explained concept, fiddled with it a bit, and then took a complete left turn with it. Add to this that it's a crossover with a big Marvel event and another title, and the fact that it references several other recent events in the Marvel universe, and it should be total havoc to read outside the context of reading it in the monthly comics with all of the other comics in the Marvel universe. Still, I think I acquitted myself well. I haven't yet read the Infinity series, and may have had some of it spoiled by having read this ahead of time, but I wasn't in the mood to pick it up and read the story in sequence after I had already started this trade, and I still don't really kn... moreow what happened in it on the whole, just a thing or two that will happen. This volume doesn't resolve the crisis as I had expected, so I guess there is more confusion to come. That said, it wasn't all head-scratching and wondering. There were interesting story elements and some really underhanded tactics taken in certain places, and the story took some unexpected twists and turns. I have also learned more about Wakanda than I ever really knew before, so there's that, at least. Overall, it was enjoyable, but if you hadn't been reading loads of Marvel comics, or aren't that interested in Infinity, this could probably be a pass.
review 2: Jonathan Hickman - writerMike Deodato Jr. - illustratorIn the previous volume it was discovered that at some point in the past a planet Earth in one of the infinite realities that makes up the multiverse was destroyed before the natural course of events would have led to it's end. This resulted in a wave-like effect cascading throughout the multiverse, causing different realities to successively come into contact with each other where the original anomaly occurred - the planet Earth. Each time two realities come into contact either both Universes are destroyed or one of the planet Earths is destroyed before they touch, saving both Universes. The Illuminati became aware of this situation when Black Panther witnessed an incursion in Wakanda. During this event a woman transported herself from the surface of the encroaching Earth onto our planet and then completely destroyed the alternate Earth with some kind of doomsday weapon. The Illuminati captured the woman, calling herself the Black Swan, and have used her as a source of information about the incursions. During the first incursion the Illuminati faced together, they re-formed the Infinity Gauntlet and had Captain America use it to push the encroaching Universe away. This tactic worked, but resulted in the seeming destruction of the Infinity Gems, save the Time gem which simply vanished. After this, Captain America was unwilling to consider destroying the encroaching Earths as a solution to the incursions and was removed from the Illuminati with his memories wiped. Captain America was replaced in the group by Beast, and they continued searching for a solution to the incursions. This volume finds the Illuminati reeling from events on Earth while still searching for a solution to the incursions. The nations of Wakanda and Atlantis are marching steadily towards war, with violent attacks being fueled by the egos and ambitions of their leaders. Black Panther and Namor, both members of the Illuminati, are torn between national responsibilities and larger concerns. Even as global politics threaten to overwhelm the Illuminati, an old villain rears his head - Thanos the Tyrant has returned seeking the Infinity Gems and hunting for his secret, lost connection to the mysterious Inhumans. The Illuminati must battle the mad Titan while defending the Earth from the incursions, but when Thanos' servants compromise one of the groups' members it appears that all is lost.Gripping, intense writing from master scribe Hickman. Deodato's art is quite enjoyable as well. This collection deals mostly with the Illuminati trying to figure out the incursion thing while still having to deal with Thanos in the background. Most of the "Infinity" event actually happens in material not collected in this volume, and the battle and defeat of Thanos are completely glossed over. Still, this is an excellent graphic novel and a must-have for fans of Hickman's New Avengers.Highly recommended. 5/5 less

Wasn't as good as part 1. Seemed as though an explanation for what was going on was missing.

Not my thing. Then again, I should have read Infinity and Avengers: Infinity first.
