review 1: È il lucernario a illuminare i sei microcosmi racchiusi nel condominio. Ci mostrerà maschere che rotolano e sentimenti che si srotolano oltre le porte di questi microcosmi.Dietro quelle porte si consuma la vita, in certi casi la si lascia drammaticamente scorrere.Dietro le porte emerge ciò che si cela al mondo esterno.Dietro le porte si consumano atti e parole che graffiano e feriscono anche i muri.Donne, uomini, vecchi e bambini accomunati da un bisogno tanto disperato quanto taciuto di amore e serenità in un microcosmo dove regnano invece menzogna e meschinità, bestialità ed egoismo, diffidenza, odio, disprezzo e paura.Talvolta, rabbiosamente, esplode la verità, e "… sembra indecente”, perché, “Tutto va bene finché non si cominciano a dire cose indecenti, ... morefino a che non si cominciano a dire le verità!".Poi torna il silenzio, carico di dolore e acredine.In questo girone di quotidiana infelicità, spicca la figura di Silvestre, vecchio e saggio calzolaio innamorato da sempre di sua moglie Mariana. Silvestre ospita il giovane Abel e con lui dialoga a lungo sul bisogno d’amore fra gli uomini. E Abel ascolta. Lui sta cercando la sua via, teme i tentacoli del sentimento, li recide prima di sentirsi imprigionato.E come Abele il pastore, libero, ramingo e solitario, lascerà - portando con sé il suo pessimismo - Silvestre e Mariana che lo hanno accolto come inquilino in casa loro e si sono affezionati a lui tanto da sentirlo parte della famiglia.Caino è ancora lontano, se ne intravede appena l’ombra. Ma in questo giovane Saramago, che si stenta a riconoscere, sono già presenti i temi a lui tanto cari.
review 2: I was attracted to this book, not by the author, of whom I was embarrassingly unaware in spite of his Nobel Prize for Literature, but by the back story. This was Saramago's first book handed to a publisher in 1953. Thirty six years later he received an offer from them to publish. Saramago refused, reclaimed the manuscript, and vowed it would no be published in his lifetime, stung as he had been by the lack of courtesy and respect shown him by the publisher. He did not write another for over twenty years. He died in 2010. The book was published in 2011 in Portuguese and 2014 in English.Skylight is a wonderful voyeurs read. Saramago involves the reader in the lives of a number of working class families who share an apartment block in Lisbon not long after the war. Initially it is a little difficult to identify the different groups, but soon you become totally immersed in their lives and issues; the philosophical cobbler, the itinerant, the cultured sisters and their daughters who have come down in the world, the family destroyed by the loss of their son, the loveless marriage. These are wonderfully wrought characters dealing with their small pleasures, self doubts anxieties.Add to the great cast of characters the wonderful prose of Saramago, translated by Margaret Jull Costa, and you have an absolute gem of a read. less
