review 1: Saramago creates a modern myth on the problem of mortality and exposes how politics, commerce, art and love can only exist with death behaving well. It is less surprising or funny than his thesis suggests but it is still a product of his unique irony. I think this is more of a 3.5 star read. I judge it against the brilliance of earlier works like "Blindness" and this leads to my less than perfect score. This is still a delightful read with ample insight and enjoyment.
