review 1: Dark emperor was a great book. The book was full of dark but cool colors to bring things to life in the dark. This poetry book takes you into the night to discover the wild creatures of the night. I think this book would help explaining to children that there are things that do stay up at night and sleep during the day. I think that most children would think that when they are sleeping everything else would be as well. Dark Emperor introduces us to creepy and cool creatures that thrive at night. The book also gives great information on each poem about the particular thing they are talking about, it is very informational. I would use this book in my classroom for many things such as poetry. I think that using it with science would work also to help explain how thing... mores live, the book even explains photosynthesis. This book would be a great addition to any teachers classroom library.
review 2: Dark Emperor and Other Poems of the Night by Joyce Sidman is a book of poems about things in nature that seem to come to life in the nighttime, including nocturnal animals, trees that take in extra water through their roots at night, the moon, and more.I liked that while all of the poems were written by the same author, each one is unique. For example, the first poem has a repeating line, "Welcome to the moon," at the end of each stanza. The poem "Dark Emperor" about a mouse that runs from the great horned owl is a concrete poem in the shape of a mouse head.I also loved that on the left page is a poem and on the right page is a detailed illustration and an informational blurb explaining more about the subject of the poem on the left. Because of this, I imagine using this book in a science unit about nocturnal animals. If students were studying one of the animals that is a subject of a poem, they would get a lot details from the informational piece accompanying the poem. less

Discovered this at Wonderbugs - with the reading of a porcupette poem. Beautiful and delightful!
