review 1: Sidman, J. (2009). Red sings from treetops: A year in colors. New York, NY: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.Picture Book Soak (one I really liked) This picture book is essentially one long poem in which each season of the year is described through colors. I love the author’s word choices. Sidman uses such vivid description that you can easily visualize the season and its many associated colors seen in nature. Moreover, the color that is focused on in the text is emphasized in the accompanying illustration, usually in such a way that it stands out in the art, drawing your eye to the highlighted color. This book has so many metaphors that it would be an excellent selection for language arts instruction about metaphors. Additionally, this book depicts the symbolism of colors. So,... more this story could be an excellent discussion piece when teaching students about symbols and how colors can be symbols in literature. Although it is a picture book, the quantity of figurative language and the richness of the diction may make it more appropriate for upper elementary aged students; however, younger students may very well enjoy having this picture book read aloud to them too. I really enjoyed this book, and I think it would make an excellent classroom library addition!
review 2: The author paints a picture with words, describing the various colors one sees, hears and feels during the different seasons. Whimsical illustrations accompany the poem. A teacher could use this picturebook in early elementary as students learn different colors and shades of colors, or in an ELD class. I could also see this book being used during a poetry unit or in Writing class, to encourage students to play with words and expand their descriptive writing. less
