review 1: "What the Heart Knows, Chants, Charms and Blessings" is a beautiful book by the Newbery Honor winner Joyce Sidman. It is a book of chants to repair friendship, celebrate happiness and bravery, spells, invocations, laments, and remembrances. She even has a poem called "How to find a Poem." She states: " Wake with a dream-filled head, Stumble out into the morning, barely aware of how the sun is laying down strips of silver." Her words and description make the pages come alive and help you to feel and see what she is writing about. This little book is a rich collection of different styles of poetry great for the 10-12 year old student. The book is illustrated by the Caldecott Honor winning artist, Pamela Zagarenski. The illustrations are mixed media paintings on w... moreood and computer illustration. You experience the mood of the poetry through her illustrations.
review 2: I was disappointed in this book. It had a wide range of interest, but it seemed very simplistic to me. The chants were too long to be a chant that someone could remember and use, the charms were too general, and the blessings seemed weak. I'm not one who necessarily has to have rhyme to make a poem, but I didn't feel the sense of lyricism that I was hoping for. The only feeling I really ended up with from this book was ambivalence. Not what I'm looking for in a book like this. less
