review 1: I wasn’t sure what to expect from this, especially given that I don’t “get” the BDSM lifestyle, but I needn’t have feared. I found the larger part of the story was relationship based, and not simply based on the BDSM elements.Ben uses BDSM to distract him from the guilt of not saving his sister who was murdered. However after the night he tries fire flogging for the first time, he has a motorcycle accident, badly injuring himself, and as he’s unable to play, his current dom cuts him lose. Soon Jude is trying to build a relationship with Ben whom he’s been in love with for years, but he doesn’t get the whole BDSM thing either, although he tries to be what Jude needs.I have to say I detest the smug dom, and this was refreshing to see someone who is not into t... morehe lifestyle try to learn what it’s all about. I think that helped me relate to the story better. I appreciated that even though he was trying to give Ben what he needed, there were some things he just couldn’t accept or do. So it was nice to see a dom with limits when that usually isn’t something that is even discussed.I also liked the idea that Jude was going to press Ben to see a therapist for his issues, and that BDSM could still be a part of their lives, but shouldn’t be used to “mask” real issues. The little things made the story enjoyable, Jude’s relationship with is annoying coworker Dennis and his sister were a nice contrast to the more emotionally wrenching situation with Ben.Fire flogging? Sounds interesting, but also sounded like a lot of work. Almost like a group project to keep everyone safe, which is good, but not necessarily something that intrigued me enough to look into it further. :-) However I do enjoy fire dancers/jugglers.I kind of hope Kage (the ex) gets a HEA. Yeah, he was kind of a dick, but I got the impression there was more going on there with him. I felt bad for him. Gawd. I want everyone to have a HEA. :-)Definitely worth a read, even if you’re not a hardcore BDSM fan because it takes a different angle to it.
review 2: 4.5 stars. I loved this story. Two men with very broken hearts, for very different reasons.Ben is broken from his little sister's death. She was raped and murdered when he was 18 and blames himself for not being there to pick her up from school like he was supposed to. He's constantly lost in his head visualizing her brutal death. His roommate and best friend, Julian, (Jude) has been in love with Ben for years, barely able to cope with the fact that he's never been enough to earn a second glance from Ben. He stands by while Ben moves from one guy to the next. Little does he know that the men are actually Dom's, or that Ben copes with his pain by weekly floggings and inflicting a very different kind of pain upon himself. His Dom, Kage, is the only one who is able to keep the nightmares at bay. After the accident, all their secrets come to light during the time that Jude cares for Ben. The two grow so much in this story. Ben begins to heal and Jude grows into his new role as Ben's Dom. It's a rocky road at first, but he eventually becomes what Ben needs, even finding that he truly enjoys it. The love that grows between them is touching and sweet to witness. This book was a joy to read. It was hot, sweet, heartbreaking and beautifully written. less
