review 1: It turns the tables on the legal system… and entertains us every step of the way! We’ve all heard the endless string of lawyer jokes that are so popular – we may have even told a few ourselves. This novel effectively turns the tables on our faulty perception of the legal profession. This novel is written from the unusual perspective of an ethical attorney and the high price she pays for keeping her integrity. The novel begins quietly as befits the small town of Deering, Vermont. We learn all about the town and about our young protagonist, Rebecca Lawson. Starting the story out this way and taking the time to tell us these details was a very smart choice. We get to know Rebecca – identify with her. We learn about her roots – about her family and how her background... more instilled into her certain ideals. Because of the author’s meticulous attention to detail and the fine character analysis presented, we understand how Rebecca grew up – and into – the person she is today. Further, we find that what she wants is what we want for her because what she wants for herself benefits us all. Rebecca Lawson is somebody that is solid and dependable and feels a pull towards following tradition and keeping heritage alive. As is often the case with those interested in preserving the rich tapestry of life that precedes them, she wants peace and quiet and to lead a life in service to others. Therefore, Rebecca takes life – and her duties as a duly sworn officer of the court – seriously. We like her for that, and more importantly, we like her. This furrowing the ground and planting seeds at the outset is what allows us to understand the full degree of how the unfortunate and explosive series of events that Rebecca is about to encounter, will jar and unsettle her. Because of this excellent use of strong character development and pacing, we realize that they are at complete odds with the life she’s always dreamed of having. Far into the story, it explains her dogged determination in trying to bring the wrongdoers to justice because in doing so – she not only upholds those ideals she believes so strongly in – she also wins back her life! That’s powerful motivation and it’s because the time was taken to set the stage with the right elements at the very beginning! The plot is interesting and keeps us engaged. There are several twists that we don’t see coming. There are also occasions when we do see things coming and we yell at our heroine to open her eyes and not be blinded by her all-too tender heart. Again, this device is effectively used and makes us like her all the more. It adds rather than detracts from the storyline. Soon enough the leisurely early pacing that assures us that everything is status quo quickens. We find that we’re speeding through the action and watching events come at her from all sides! She doesn’t know what to do or who to trust and neither do we. We eagerly follow her as she uses her keen logic to start putting the pieces together to unravel the financial mystery. The scheme she devises to expose the truth is clever and one that would work in the real world. This helps add authenticity to the story. When her plan is put into play, she starts to understand the gravity and sheer enormity of what is transpiring. She enlists the help of an old friend – the only person she can trust with such potentially devastating evidence. In the end, we have a complete picture of a greedy financial scheme that could have been pulled from today’s headlines! We are left to wonder if this is just fiction or if it’s something that is actually taking place. Confidential Communications delivers a punch of excitement, a hell of a story and likable heroine. I have the sneaking suspicion that a lot of the heroine’s admirable traits are pulled straight from the heart of this very talented author! I don’t have the prerequisite legal burden to prove it –only a sneaking suspicion. One thing I am sure of is that this woman can write! Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Confidential Communications!!! You’ll be glad you did!!
review 2: Sex, lies, international conspiracy and murder-this book has it all.Becky Lawson is a new attorney building a modest law practice in a small Vermont town when she inadvertently uncovers corporate fraud. Her strict code of ethics puts her in such danger proving that no good deed goes unpunished. Soon Becky and her loved ones are caught in a web of murderous intrigue, including her beloved cat Miranda. J.R.Reardon does a splendid job creating characters that we love, hate, and fear. The author slowly creates a complex financial conspiracy that her hero tackles head on. As complex as the fraud is, the author is able to clearly guide the reader through while maintaining a high level of excitement. There are enough plot twists and turns to make the Indy 500 jealous.
