review 1: I don't know how to rank this book. It was beautifully written and the characters fully developed but I hated, loathed, wanted to punch two out of the four main protagonists. My book club liked Percy. I found him pompous, pretentious and off-putting while wielding his verbal acuity as a weapon. But to have such a visceral reaction to an imaginary person says worlds about the writing. Decide for yourself whether you like Percy and the other men.
review 2: So many characters; so many contemporary issues. I loved how it all fit together. 70-year old Percy, his new girlfriend, his two daughters, his grandson, his grandson's college roommate, his neighbor's gardener, the gay preschool teacher, etc... Dating, divorce, custody, cancer, gay marriage, environmental a... morectivism, immigration laws, nosy neighbors, etc... Put them all in a pot, stir in humor and great character development. Critics of the book say it tried to cover too much ground. But I personally know people dealing with all these issues (except environmental terrorists- I don't know any terrorists). I didn't think it was overdone. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next, I really grew to like the characters and didn't want it to end! Hoping for a sequel! less
