review 1: Would have rated this book 4 1/2 stars if I could have. Thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed it. Having listened to the book on CD, read by 2 narrators, I wonder if that influenced my opinion (I will mention that I was initially dismayed to find that the author was one of them -- her voice was a bit flat and I kept thinking a legitimate reader might have done a better job. But by the novel's end, Julia became Louisa in my mind.)I somewhat agree with reviewers comments about a slow, disjointed start, and admit to a bit of confusion, particularly regarding dates, since I couldn't flip back to reread/check. However, once the characters were established in their adult lives, the parallel stories began to gel and to radiate a genuine truth. The sisters as well as their parents w... moreere somewhat difficult to like (especially Mae!!) but impossible to forget. The plot 'twiet' was a complete shock and yet understandable. The later comment regarding tragedy as a part of aging life particularly resonated. This story is full of deep insights and piercing detail. The language is positively luscious. There are many, many exquisite vignettes. And what a range of fascinating subjects, from ecology to modern art to the ravages of chemotherapy to the incomparable pain of inexplicable loss. Small nods to life in New England rang so true. I'll miss listening to this story!
review 2: I had a lot of trouble getting through this audio book. I think part of the reason I didn't like it is that one of the characters is read by the author and her voice is, shall we say, a bit off-putting. Even though, the story seemed to be all over the place and I think I was just expecting something different. It wasn't so much a tale of two sisters as it was tales of disjointed stories of two people who happen to be sisters. And the ending, well, let's just say it came out of left field and left me wondering further. I am not sure why Glass decided to do that. If I was more invested in the book and its characters perhaps this abrupt turn of events would have made more sense.I will say that Mary Stuart Masterson beautifully read the part of Clem. I think that's what kept me going. And Clem's work with the bears was highly interesting. less
