review 1: What a gem of a book! Really enjoyed this book...had the elements I gravitate to...foreign location, historical time period, relationships, mystery and romance. This tells the story of three women from London in the late 1920's who travel by ship to India to seek husbands to marry. The individual plots regarding these women, and cross-over story lines, was very engaging. This book was hard to put down. I felt like I was visiting India, what with all the descriptions of geography, customs, and people. I heartily recommend it, and look forward to additional offerings from Julia Gregson.
review 2: I was very enthusiastic about this book when I first started it. I think it represented well the time (1920's) and place. I could feel the heat and richness of I
... morendia. However, by the end I found I didn't really care much about all the main characters. The book is quite long and tightening it up might have helped. So, while the story somewhat kept my interest in the end I walked away unsatisfied. less
