review 1: Dispara, yo ya estoy muerto (Spanish Edition) - Shoot, I'm Already DeadThis is a story of murder, revenge, and hatred. It spans from the late 19th century to the present. It is told through the history of two families. The Zuckers, a Jewish family who were merchants in the Czarist Russia and were forced to escape to Paris after Alexander II was assassinated and the Jews were blamed. They went to Paris and from there to Palestine. There, they interact with the Ziad family in the early 20th century; an Arab family born and raised in Palestine. Their lives are intertwined by their common ownership of "La Huerta de La Esperanza" (Hope's Orchard). The Zuckers were socialist and they settle in a commune where everyone is treated equally, irregardless of faith or national... moreity. There, the Zuckers and the Ziads live and love in harmony, taking care of each other, forming a bond, a friendship that is maintained over political and religious differences over the generations. Unfortunately, as events dismember the Jews from the Arabs, so does their relationship turn for the worst, up to the point that the current narrator - a member from the Ziad family, exerts her final revenge on the Zucker patriarch.The story starts as an interview by Miriam, a worker in charge of the UN Palestinian refugee camps. She is charged to tell the Ziad side of the story. She interviews Ezequiel Zucker, the patriarch of the Zuccker family. He, in turns gives his side of the story.Told from sometimes the third point of view, others, the first person point of view, and sometimes from an universal point of view; we are presented with a detailed story of the Jewish community, starting with the persecution by the Europeans - including the Russians - then WWI, WWI, the Holocaust, and the creation of the State of Israel with the ensuing wars. What's amazing that Ms. Navarro tries hard to present both sides of the equation: treating both The Jews and The Arabs alike. She tries to be impartial....The original Zuckers were of the opinion that "neither land nor religion would create my identity. I'm a man who wishes to live in peace, no matter where." "People like us have only one purpose, to play the script that was written for us. No one cares what we think or feel. Those who have made up their minds already, will not change their minds. The British have abandoned us one more time, and the UN has reaffirmed their treason. We have nothing else to do but fight for our rights, our homes, and our families." However, the young ones, the ones who are currently living in Israel are too radicalized, as portrayed by Aaron Zucker - who's in charge of political assassinations to protect the State of Israel.The Ziads felt that the true fatherland is our infancy, such as the one inhabited by the Ziads and the Zuckers. "Life placed you in opposite sides and both have been faithful to your cause. You are united by bonds that neither one can break even though you may have fought in different camps." However, once their dreams of an Arab State in Palestine are shattered, they have no option but to take to arms to fight for their rights, their homes, and their families.After nine hundred pages of talking, hate triumphs and the final act of revenge takes place.The book is an amazing read. It gives life to the atrocities that were committed in the Middle east by the European powers and explains the root of the hatred between Jews and Arabs. I loved the book, but I felt that it repeated itself too much. We were told the phrase "the only way to save yourself is either dying or killing" every twenty pages. The storyline even though it's quite compelling, sometimes is grueling. The descriptions of the Holocaust are a bit severe and not for the weak. For anyone who wishes to understand the realities of the Middle-East, this a work you must read. I loved the work, but I felt it needed some more editing, as if the work was still unfinished. Perhaps it reflects the fact that the story is still being written....
review 2: He aprendido. Para quien quiera saber sobre el origen del conflicto entre judíos y árabes palestinos, con un recorrido de la persecución antisemita en España, Rusia, Alemania nazi... Trabajadísimo, profundiza en los personajes y en sus ideologías antagónicas. ¿Demasiado extenso? Quizás se trata de devorar el libro para que no te desenganches de la trama ni te pierdas con los personajes. Lo recomiendo. less
