review 1: This went at a slower pace for me than Klassen's other books I've read (The Silent Governess and The Maid of Fairbourne Hall). This doesn't mean it was not good (because it was!) I just did not gobble it up as fast. The storyline was interesting and I kept guessing what the secret was because unlike a lot of other books that try to be "sneaky" about secrets/twists, I could not put my finger on a definite outcome.
review 2: This is a little like Footloose for the 19th century gentleman. It was cute and sweet. Nothing really more than it was. But I like that the author didn't take the easy way out and just use the SURPRISE YOURE ADOPTED trope, but actually dug in to some of the harder topics, like who slept with whom to produce this baby. Many Christian books avoi
... mored talking about sex at all, as if Christians just...what? Never have sex? That's ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the lack of super descriptive or graphic sex scenes--part of the reason I read these books is to avoid that--but sex is a big part if life and ignoring it completely drives me crazy. I like that Klassen doesn't shy away from both the positive and negative impacts sex can have on relationships, life, and the legacy you leave your children (especially with issues of parentage and "legitimacy"). Anyway, I'm rambling. I just like that these characters were real people who made real (some times huge) mistakes. Because I hate when Christian books have characters that are like "it was a mistake but not a sin or at least not a BIG SIN (whatever that means) because I'm a Christian so I couldn't possibly sin in the way that has reasonable and large consequences I was only gossiping a little NO BIG look how I've grown I don't gossip (much) anymore!" BECAUSE NO THAT'S NOT REAL LIFE. Anyway. I liked this book. less

A little slow to start, but I was hooked by the time I reached the halfway point. Lovely story.
