review 1: I absolutely loved this book, though the content is abhorrent. The kidnapper/murderer is one of the worst fictional baddies I have ever read about, he is a serial killer who has no problem killing anyone- even though he has a certain fixed criteria of the children, he will kill anyone who gets in his way, even his "wife". We never get to find out his real name, though we do get some insight into what made him the way he is. He has more than several false names none of which pan out in any government records.Carl and his sidekicks are drawn into a case that starts with a message in a bottle. This message was apparently written several decades ago and has been sitting inside the bottle on a windowsill in Scotland (where it was fished out of the sea). When someone finally deci... moredes to have a look inside the bottle they find a message written in blood in Danish on some old newspaper, so the whole kit and caboodle is shipped off to Dept Q in Copenhagen. The note starts off the story of two brothers who have been kidnapped and held captive by a man who had befriended their family. They are imprisoned somewhere near water in a hut where they can hear a continuous hum of a motor. These are the only clues Dept Q have to start the investigation. Carl and the gang are able to discern some of the message and from this a whole new case opens up concerning kidnappings and murders of children from religious "cults" (ie not mainstream religions) dating back decades and still going on til current times. The ending is tragic in so many ways and had me thinking about this story for several days afterwards. This book also seemed to have more humor than the first two and Rose's sister Ysar has taken her place as the admin girl back in Carl's office. She seems to be just as insightful as Rose, but has no social skills.Carl is still a tad lazy(ie he would rather be watching TV with his feet up on the desk), but is still very good at his job. The dark horse is once again Assad, the Syrian( or is he) side-kick, with a lot more insight than Carl sometimes gives him credit for. He also does not live at the address he has given to the personnel dept. Curiouser and curiouser.
review 2: Masterfully written. Read it in 2 days because I couldn't put it down. About children who are kidnapped for ransom and one of them manages to write a letter for help in blood and shove it into a bottle sealed with ship tar. The bottle washes up in Scotland and then sits around for a couple of years until someone opens it and realizes it's not in English. It finally ends up with Dept. Q and the deeply funny team of Carl Morek, Rose, and Haffez Al-Assad. This book is also titled 'A Conspiracy of Faith'. less
