review 1: My first Department Q mystery and I'll listen to others--since I've verified that this narrator doesn't read them. (He's not a bad narrator, but, from my point of view, he made a mistake in choosing to read the dialog with an accent, usually Danish. maybe. I couldn't always identify the speaker and the cadence seemed off. Better to do as Vance did with the Larssen series: read in an English accent. Drove me crazy with the annoying accents. That said, it's an interesting series as the cold case books often are. Intriguing, sympathetic characters (especially Carl Morck and his Syrian para-professional assistant who knows way more than he should about police work), they're flawed but sympathetic; multiple plot lines and twists, and political issues within the department and D... moreenmark play a role; complex style with points of view of both Morck and kidnapped politician, as well as alternating time lines; and a melancholy tone, gritty and intense as we expect from Scandinavian crime novels. The ending had a bit too much Sturm und Drang for my taste but overall a good story--and characters I want to know more of.
review 2: 3.5 stars. Engaging story. I enjoyed the characters, good detective novel, liked the interplay of the police officer and the assistant. No surprise as to "who did it", that was easy to figure out by page 100 - not sure if that was intentional or not. He develops a good story. Writing seemed a little bit off due to translation, but easy to read and good all around. I'll look forward to reading more of his books. less
