review 1: Another case for Department Q, from the dead case files. Carl, Assad and Rose investigate a handful of missing persons 23 years ago, and wind up stumbling into paranoid political intrigue that extends back to the 1950's and is still playing out in contemporary Danish talk shows and elections. All the while more of Rose's past is revealed, more of Assad's mysterious background is unearthed, more on the crazy nail-gun killer, and Carl inches closer to divorce amidst psychos ramming him with their cars, trying to blow him up and poison him. Still I could have shaved a good 80 pages off this narrative, and would propose a question to Mr. Adler-Olsen: If you have information given to you through so many perspectives does it not defeat the purpose of suspenseful writing in crime fiction? Henry James description of the novel as a loose baggy monster, in this instance, is very much the case. And I admire the shape of a leaner narrative. Not as good as Keeper of Lost Causes, but still a solid Adler-Olsen read.
