review 1: The Hotel Under the Sand is a charming, often funny book, with langauge very much targeted for grade school children. Because I'd read comparison of this novel to Terry Prachett's wonderful Nation, I was expecting a story with depth and resonance but in this is not the case. Hotel Under the Sand is intended for a much younger reader and is appropriately more focused on a lot of hustle and bustle on the part of the main characters. It's a lot of fun, but does not attempt to be in the same league as Neil Gaiman's Graveyard Book or Phillip Pullman's trilogy.
review 2: A problem I had, when I was a child, with a lot of children´s books is that they were not literal, not true, enough. I needed literalness, even if ( specially if) involved hidden treasure, caves
... morebeyond waterfalls and spaceships. And this Baker story ( so short, very nice) is one of those books, even at this advanced age, where I feel my inner 5 year old protesting it is unlikely. And it is. Charming, but also not quite my thing... less
